It’s time for the showdown that we’ve all been waiting for! It’s time for…the Vice Presidential debate? Alright, well, maybe Joe Biden will say something weird, so it won’t be a total loss.
I think tonight’s debate will be sort of interesting to watch, but will have virtually no impact on this election. That’s because both candidates know their role – they need to play it cool, look respectable, and not say anything stupid. And I suspect that’s what they’ll do.
The Romney Camp has been doing a lot of work to remind us that Joe Biden is a very experienced and skilled debater, while Paul Ryan has never debated at the national level. Given O’s relatively weak showing last week, Biden may want to take this opportunity to pounce. I expect to see Biden go on the offensive a bit more than the Prez did in his debate, particularly if Ryan starts to stray from the truth in the way that Mitt did. Then again, if Paul Ryan pulls this one out, it could be devastating for the incumbents. Still, I don’t see it happening.
Somehow, both VP candidates have been painted as a couple of ranting lunatics by their respective political rivals. I’m not sure how that works, given that Biden and Ryan are both a lot better at the whole “regular guy” thing than most politicians these days. I think that’s probably what we’ll see – a couple of guys trying not to seem irregular. So if we’re lucky, it might be sort of awkward.
