The University of South Alabama is a state university in bustling Mobile. It features a student body of about 15,000, boasts a football program transitioning into Division I-A, and occasionally a campus police officer guns down a freshman.
You must be thinking what I thought. The kid has to have been armed. He was armed with nothing more than an erection. Freshman Gilbert Thomas Collar was naked and banging on the windows of the campus police station at about 2:30am when an officer went outside to confront him. The officer said that he challenged him to a fight several times before eventually charging at him.
The officer is the only one alive to tell the story and we know his version is going to be self-serving. He said that the student was “muscular”, what the officer doesn’t mention is that he was 5’7” and 135 pounds. The officer claims that the student was acting strangely. Yeah he was drunk, high, or both. How about trying to subdue him first? The officer was at the station, I don’t see why he couldn’t ask for assistance? Also, what ever happened to tasing someone? Couldn’t he have just tased the kid and threw him in a holding cell?
Thank God this was all caught on the police station security camera and this will all get sorted out. I love the fact that we live in an age where everyone is video taping everyone else and those who have a quick trigger finger can be held accountable.
