For the second time in one month, the FDA has approved a prescription weight-loss drug. This time it’s Qysmia, a drug that the Administration had refused to approve for years because its effects are small compared to its cost. It’s also worth noting that this pill could have some pretty serious side effects, including birth defects and the possibility of cardiovascular irregularities.
So what’s worse, being overweight or being overmedicated? I guess it’s all relative. At some point you’re so overweight that it’s healthier to be all drugged up; at some point you’re so drugged up that it would be better to just be overweight. Without getting sidetracked by a discussion of how doped-up America is as a nation, it’s probably fair to say that prescription drugs are a good thing when you really need them and a bad thing when you don’t. And that’s the real issue – too many people are on medication when there are non-medicine alternatives available.
The kicker in this case is that there is a bona fide proven cure for obesity that doesn’t involve taking drugs. It’s called exercising and eating better, and it’s not a secret. I know that I might come across as insensitive or condescending, or as someone who doesn’t understand what it’s like to be overweight. But whether or not I know what it’s like to be overweight doesn’t change the fact that most people who are obese can lose weight without taking drugs. Maybe some can’t, and for them a drug like Qysmia might be a blessing. The problem is that a whole lot of people who could lose weight on their own will also look at Qysmia as a blessing.
Anyway, I’ll get off my soapbox and go back to an activity that’s never preachy or condescending: blog writing.
