At Least We Still Have Death Cab for Cutie

By Eric Zanzucchi (@ericzanzucchi)

UPS and FedEx are salivating at the possibility that the Postal Service may cease operations in October because they are sinking too far in debt and don’t have the funding. People’s initial reaction is one of OMFG!, but do we really need the Postal Service?

The reason they are in such steep financial trouble is due to high employee salaries, good benefits packages, and a trending towards electronic communication. Would it really be a problem if this function of society was moved to the private sector?

If it was these employees would be paid what they’re worth and there would be competition amongst businesses and salaries would fluctuate based on free market value, not just be artificially inflated like they are now. UPS, FedEx and other services are already available and would gladly swoop up any increased business. More businesses would spring up as the markets dictates.

While it sucks that a lot of hard working people will lose jobs, the government needs to get out of the way and let bad businesses fail. Better ones will take their place and the free market, like nature, will be at peace.

I just send fucking emails anyways.
